Twenty-Five years ago I received a BFA after studying painting
and ceramics in New York and Rome, Italy. I have enjoyed working
in several mediums including sculptural work with various woods,
bamboo, Japanese papers, porcelain and glass. Additionally I have
worked in oils and gouache.
My first encounter with encaustic paintings was in 2001 at a friend’s
home. The sensual surface, luminosity and unusual possibilities
within this medium attracted me immediately. I asked him to teach
me a few basics regarding this new medium and then purchased Joanne
Mattera’s book, The
Art of Encaustic Painting. Two years later I attended an R&F
Intensive workshop taught by Cynthia
Winika, a comprehensive hands on experience.
Recently I attended the second Annual Encaustic
Conference organized by Joanne Mattera. I enjoyed four full
days of demonstrations, lectures, gallery exhibits, networking and
a workshop with Kay
Walkingstick. Additionally I had the chance to speak with several
IEA (International
Encaustic Artists) members. Upon returning I joined the IEA
and am in the process of starting an Atlanta Chapter.
This September I will attend a weeklong workshop with
Lorraine Glessner, artist and professor at Tyler School of Art
in Philadelphia. This comprehensive workshop will include alternative
mark making within the encaustic medium. Lorraine’s works
are stunning. A true alchemist, she incorporates fabric and papers
that have been subjected to branding, rusting, burying, decomposition,
or exposure to the elements.
